Underdiagnosed Conditions A common form of medical malpractice occurs when diseases or conditions are underdiagnosed or missed entirely. Some conditions are underdiagnosed more often than others. Underdiagnosed conditions occur commonly when symptoms are mild or vague or if there is a lack of adequate knowledge about certain conditions such as depression. Underdiagnosis also occurs with conditions that are rare and aren't necessarily considered by doctors. Common types of underdiagnosed conditions Common conditions that are underdiagnosed because they have mild or non-existent symptoms include: High cholesterol Type 2 diabetes Osteoporosis Chronic kidney disease Sexually transmitted diseases Conditions that are difficult to recognize because of the lack of awareness and are therefore commonly underdiagnosed include: Depression Lactose intolerance Asthma Sleep disorders Underdiagnosed conditions because of the rarity of the condition include: Bipolar disorder Celiac disease Whooping cough
