Infections in Hospitals Every year, approximately two million people in the United States acquire infections in hospitals, resulting in severe patient injury and 99,000 preventable fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Infections contracted in hospitals are most often completely preventable and frequently occur as a result of the negligence or wrongdoing of a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional. Sadly, these types of avoidable medical errors are more prevalent than we think and may result in serious illness, injury, or death to a patient. As of 2002 hospital acquired infections were as follows: 35,967 pneumonia, 30,665 for blood stream infections, 13,088 urinary tract infections, 8205 surgical site infections, and 11,062 for all other infections.
