Cancer Misdiagnosis

According to a recent study, approximately 12 percent of cancer cases are misdiagnosed as a result of poor sampling techniques, insensitive results, and reader error. A cancer misdiagnosis can cause serious injury and/or death and result in severe emotional and physical pain and suffering and financial losses.

Why does cancer misdiagnosis occur?

In most cases, a cancer misdiagnosis is caused by the mistakes or wrongdoing of a medical professional. The following are some of the most commonly reported types of negligence by health care professionals that may result in a cancer misdiagnosis:

  • Failing to identify obvious lumps
  • Failing to order proper exams (x-rays, CT scans, MRIs)
  • Failing to recognize common signs and symptoms of cancer
  • Failing to properly read test results
  • Failing to follow up on test results
  • Failing to order a biopsy or future tests
  • Diagnosing a tumor as benign or mistaking the tumor as an infection or a cyst
  • Failing to follow-up with a patient
